RCC house construction: the process, from foundation to roof
If you've ever wondered what happens between 'breaking ground' and 'first-floor slab', this is the version you'll actually understand.

1. The soil test
Two-bore soil test, ₹8,000–₹15,000. The soil report decides the foundation type (strip, isolated, raft, or pile), the depth, and the concrete grade. We don't draw a single line of foundation before this is in.
2. The excavation
Excavation is done with a JCB or a manual dig, depending on the soil and the plot. Baramati's black-cotton soil needs deeper excavation and a murrum layer at the bottom for the foundation to sit on.
3. The foundation
PCC (plain cement concrete) at the bottom - 100mm thick, M10 grade. Then the footing steel - Fe 500D TMT, designed per the structural drawing. Then the RCC footing - M20 grade, cube-tested.
4. The plinth
The plinth beam ties the foundation together. It's the level at which the brickwork starts. We do a damp-proof course (DPC) at the plinth to stop ground moisture from rising into the walls.
5. The columns and walls
Columns go up first - RCC, with the steel per the structural design. Then the brickwork (wire-cut clay brick) or AAC block, infilled between the columns. We leave chases for the electrical and plumbing.
6. The slab
Each floor slab is shuttered, reinforced, poured, vibrated, cured. M20 designed-mix concrete, slump-tested, cube-tested every 30 cum. Curing is 14 days minimum.
7. The roof
The top floor is the roof slab, with waterproofing done as a two-coat acrylic polymer. We do a 48-hour water test before we hand over.
Real questions, real answers.
How long does the RCC structure take to build?
+
For a typical G+1 bungalow, the RCC structure (foundation to roof) takes 3–4 months. The full project, including finish, takes 8–10 months.
What is the standard concrete grade for a Pune home?
+
M20 designed-mix for the structure. M25 for G+2 and above. M30 for commercial. We don't use nominal-mix concrete on any of our briefs.
What is the standard steel grade?
+
Fe 500D TMT, BIS-certified, with manufacturer test certificate per lot. We don't use Fe 415 on any of our briefs.
