Modern bungalow elevation ideas that begin with the plan

An elevation that starts as a Pinterest mood-board rarely works on the plan. The good ones start as a plan - room positions, window positions, the sit-out - and the elevation follows. The lines on the outside of the home are the lines of the rooms on the inside.

Most plots need three elevations designed: the front, the side, and the rear. Each is shaped by the rooms behind it. The front has the public rooms (drawing, dining, sit-out). The sides have the staircase, the kitchen, the bathrooms. The rear has the private rooms (bedrooms, study) and the drying area.

In Pune's climate, the materials that age well are: exposed concrete (with a good quality sealer), natural stone (Kandla grey, basalt), HPL cladding (for accent walls), teak for the door, and good-quality exterior paint (Asian Paints Ace). Materials to avoid: glossy tiles on the outside (they streak), cheap paint (it fades in 18 months), and acrylic plaster (it peels).

The 2026 brief is warm-minimal, not glassy-modern. Off-white walls, teak accents, a horizontal datum line at the window lintel, jaali or HPL in the carport, no false ceiling on the elevation. A sit-out that's an outdoor room, not a porch. The home looks like it grew there, not like it was dropped from the sky.
