Vastu shastra rates east- and north-facing plots highest — the morning sun enters from the east, and north is associated with openness. A west or south plot scores lower on the classic chart but is routinely planned well by reassigning rooms. The checker above scores all seven key rooms for each direction.

A vastu chart overlays the plot with nine zones (the pavchak/mandali grid). Traditionally: northeast (Ishanya) for the pooja room, southeast (Agneya) for the kitchen, southwest (Nairatya) for the master bedroom, northwest (Vayavya) for stores and children's rooms.
