Steel rate in Pune today: what a kg of TMT actually costs.
Two dealers can quote ₹46/kg and ₹59/kg on the same afternoon and both be telling the truth - one is ex-GST Fe415, the other landed Fe500D. Here are the September 2026 per-kg and per-tonne bands for Pune, the brand map (Tata, Kalika, Rajuri, Pushpa), the GST line where comparisons go wrong, and the 3.5-4.5 kg/sqft number to plan against.

| Brand / grade | Per kg | ≈ Per tonne | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tata Tiscon / JSW / SAIL (Fe500D) | ₹55-63 | ₹55,000-63,000 | National premium; best bendability & consistency for the frame |
| Kalika (Fe500D) | ₹50-57 | ₹50,000-57,000 | Pune-region mill, dense dealer network |
| Rajuri / Pushpa (Fe500D) | ₹49-56 | ₹49,000-56,000 | Local mills; ₹3-7 under national brands at the same grade |
| Mainstream Fe415 / Fe500 | ₹44-52 | ₹44,000-52,000 | The lower quotes you'll see; check the grade before comparing |
| Market extremes (all grades/channels) | ₹44-60+ | ₹44,000-60,000+ | Full spread incl. premium 550D and odd-lot retail |
Bands, not points, because steel has more spread than any other material on the bill: grade (415 vs 500 vs 500D), brand (national vs Pune-region mill), channel (dealer-direct vs retail counter) and GST treatment all move the number. The material prices guide carries the same Fe500D band with dated sources and a staleness flag. If a quote sits far below the band, ask which grade and which week it is from.
The GST line - where most comparisons go wrong
Steel carries 18% GST and Pune dealer quotes are inconsistent about showing it. A ₹50/kg ex-GST quote bills at ₹59/kg - which is why two "competing" dealers ₹4-8 apart can actually be the same price, and why a suspiciously low quote usually just hasn't added tax yet. Compare only like-for-like: landed, GST-inclusive, freight and unloading stated on paper. Then lock the rate in writing for the delivery window - steel is the most volatile line on the whole bill, and "prevailing rate at delivery" is an open cheque.
National brand or Pune-region mill?
Kalika, Rajuri and Pushpa are searched by name for a reason: their networks are dense around Pune, PCMC and Baramati, and at the same Fe500D grade they typically sit ₹3-7/kg under the national mills. The premium buys consistency and bendability at the rebar bender - which matters most on slabs and columns. A common Pune pattern: national brand for the slab and column steel, a trusted regional mill for footings and beams, saving ₹20,000-40,000 on a standard house without compromising the members that flex. Whatever you choose, every bundle carries an IS 1786 mark and you get the mill test certificate for the lot delivered - not a photocopy of some other lot.
How many kg of steel does a house need?
Rule-of-thumb for a standard-quality 1,000 sqft G+1 home: 3.5-4.5 kg per sqft of built-up area - about 3.5-4.5 tonnes across footings, columns, beams and slab. At the Fe500D band that is ₹1.8-2.8 lakh of steel, the second-biggest material line after cement. Get your exact tonnage from the material estimator, then buy stage-wise - footing steel at excavation, frame steel at plinth, slab steel only when the slab drawing is in hand - because the rate moves weekly and steel bought early is capital parked in a heap that rusts.
